Spring is the perfect time of year to give your home a little extra TLC. After a long and cold winter, your home is likely in need of some maintenance and upkeep. Here are five tips for spring home maintenance that will keep your property in top shape.
Winter weather can take a toll on your roof, so it's important to inspect it for any damage. Look for missing or damaged shingles, and check for any leaks or signs of water damage inside your home. If you're not comfortable climbing up on your roof a modern alternative is to use a drone. If you are proficient and comfortable, use a drone with photo and video capabilities to inspect your roof. If neither of those options is appealing to you, hire a professional to do the inspection for you. A little money spent now can save a lot of money down the line.
While you have the ladder or drone out, it is also a good time to check and clean out your gutters. Remove any debris that may have accumulated over the winter, and make sure that your gutters are properly attached and not sagging. Clogged or damaged gutters can lead to water damage, so it's important to keep them in good working order. Improperly sloped gutters can also lead to standing water, which can provide a breeding ground for mosquitos and unwanted pests.
Before the hot summer weather arrives, have your HVAC system serviced by a professional. This will ensure that your system runs efficiently and can help prevent breakdowns later in the season. It's also a good idea to replace your air filters, which can become clogged with dirt and debris over time. If you do not have Central AC, it is still a good time to check your portable or window units to make sure they are still in good condition, with no frayed or damaged wiring. These units also have filters that should be cleaned to be ready to go.
Winter weather can also take a toll on your windows and doors. Check for any cracks or gaps around your windows and doors, and make any necessary repairs. This will help keep your home energy-efficient and prevent drafts and insects. Small gaps can be filled with caulking, but should be monitored to ensure they do not expand, which can be a sign of a much larger problem somewhere in the house.
Spring is the perfect time to deep clean your home and eliminate any clutter. Dust, vacuum, and mop every nook and cranny to get rid of any allergens or winter grime. Pro-tip is to start at the top and work down, room by room. Once you are done, shut the door to know that the space is complete. Donate or sell any unwanted items to free up space in your home. A clean, clutter-free home is not only more inviting, but it can also help reduce stress – and the extra money can make for some fun pocket change on a summer vacation!
By taking the time to maintain your home in the spring with small, easily manageable tasks, you can prevent larger problems down the road and keep your property in top shape. With these five tips, you'll be well on your way to a well-maintained, energy-efficient, and comfortable home.
